Saints Mary and Elizabeth Ranks No. 19 in U.S. News ‘Best Hospitals’ in Chicago Metro Area

Chicago, Ill. (July 23, 2012) – For 2012-13, Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center (SMEMC) ranks No. 19 out of 121 Chicago metro area hospitals in U.S. News & World Report's  “Best Hospitals” rankings released on July 17. Last year, SMEMC ranked No. 22 in the Chicago metro area.

SMEMC earned distinctions as high-performing in five specialties:

  • geriatrics
  • nephrology
  • neurology and neurosurgery
  • pulmonology
  • urology

For the 23rd year, U.S. News published its annual “Best Hospitals” national rankings in 16 specialties. Hospitals that are not nationally ranked can still achieve a ranking in their state and be recognized as among the best in the metro area or region. For hospitals to make the regional list, they have to perform at nearly the level of the nationally ranked institutions (in the top 25 percent) in at least one medical specialty, according to a U.S. News & World Report news release from July 17.

“We are thrilled to be ranked a top Chicago metro area hospital and recognized as high-performing in five specialties,” said Margaret McDermott, CEO/executive vice president, SMEMC. “We have an outstanding team of doctors, nurses and healthcare staff who are committed to providing the highest level of care to patients and families. Patients can expect excellent primary and specialty care at our medical center -- in their own neighborhood without having to travel far.”

This year’s U.S. News rankings include more than 720 of nearly 5,000 hospitals nationwide. Rankings are based on patient survival rates, infection rates, patient safety measures, nurse-to-patient ratios, physician surveys and other data.

The regional rankings are aimed primarily at consumers whose care may not demand the special expertise found only at a nationally ranked “Best Hospital” or who may not be willing or able to travel long distances for medical care.

The rankings were published by U.S. News in collaboration with RTI International, a research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C. Highlights of the 2012-13 rankings will appear in the U.S. News Best Hospitals 2013 guidebook, on sale in August.
