A Family Birthing Experience
We know how important the birth of your baby is to your entire family. That's why we encourage the baby's father, siblings, grandparents and other relatives to be as involved as they wish – before, during and after the birth. We allow dad and one other support person to be present for the delivery from beginning to end. Our liberal visiting hours allows family members to spend plenty of time with mom and the new baby. Typically, newborns are with their moms in the room around the clock. However, if your baby needs specialized medical attention, we have an advanced nursery available within the unit.
Tours, Educational Programs
Making sure you're prepared and confident about the entire birth experience is very important to us. So, we're here for you each step of the way – before, during and after delivery. Before birth, we offer tours of the unit and prenatal classes such as breastfeeding, birth preparation and infant care. Once you have your baby, we will provide you with all the help you need. If you're breastfeeding, we have available specially trained nurses in breastfeeding to guide you. We also offer an infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) class.
When you go home, you may have questions and even some concerns. We offer the resources of many affiliated physicians who will be glad to talk with you any time of the day or night. Your nurse will provide you with our Parent Helpline number before you leave.
Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) Available
If you are interested in having a CNM provide prenatal care and deliver your baby, we have board-certified midwives on staff. With graduate degrees in advanced practice nursing, our CNMs offer university-level expertise in a community-hospital setting. They have extensive training and expertise in midwifery and women's health. Our CNMs serve as faculty members at the University of Illinois at Chicago, College of Nursing. They provide prenatal, childbirth and postpartum care, as well as women's health care throughout their lifespan.
Our CNMs deliver babies for healthy low-risk women. If there are any unanticipated complications, PSMEMC has obstetricians and neonatologists on the unit 24 hours a day. The nurse-midwives also offer water birth deliveries for appropriate patients in The Family Birthplace. For more information, please call the CNM practice in the Professional Office Building at 312-405-9948 or the 24-hour answering service at 312-491-5092.
