Neuroscience Services

The Neuroscience Integrative Center at Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center brings together the expertise of neurosurgeons, pain specialists, radiologists and physical therapists - who utilize the latest techniques and advanced technology to find solutions for nerve, back and spinal pain. Working as a team and in partnership with the patient, our specialists develop a treatment plan that may include therapy, medication or a minimally invasive procedure. We also offer a nurse navigator to help coordinate care.

Our Services Include:

  • Microsurgery - The use of a microscope to perform traditional spine procedures (e.g. lumbar discectomies and laminectomies) through smaller (1" - 1.5" in diameter) incisions.
  • Minimally invasive surgery - spine surgery that is performed by making small incisions (less than 1 inch in diameter) into the spine. A camera, called an endoscope, and surgical instruments are passed through these small incisions to repair the spine injury. Benefits of minimally invasive surgery include fewer surgical complications, decreased recovery time, and less scarring.
  • Image-Guided Neurosurgery - The use of minimally invasive techniques that utilize stereotactic technology, high resolution neuroimaging, and advanced computer systems to conduct delicate brain and spine surgeries in a way that increases precision and optimizes patient safety.
  • Complex spinal instrumentation - Complex fusion surgeries are typically reserved for people who suffer from significant degenerative disc disease, scoliosis, spondylolisthesis, or fracture. Spinal fusion surgery increases stability at a specific vertebral segment and eliminates pressure on the spinal nerves. It includes removing abnormal disc and bone structures and placing instrumentation that stabilizes the lumbar spine and promotes healing. The surgical hardware secures the vertebrae and promotes fusion of the bones.
  • Peripheral nerve surgery - Surgical procedures to repair injuries or damage to the nerves outside of the spinal cord or brain. The Neuroscience center offers peripheral nerve surgeries for patients dealing with brachial plexus injury, carpal tunnel syndrome, nerve tumors (including schwannomas and neurofibromas).
  • Therapeutic spine treatment & alternative therapies - Therapeutic spine treatment options are nonsurgical and are designed to decompress spinal nerves. Such options include chiropractic care, physical and occupational therapy, aquatic therapy, pain management, massage therapy and back braces. Additionally, stress management techniques – such as yoga, meditation, and acupuncture - are often encouraged to compliment more traditional therapeutic regimens. We work with a multidisciplinary team of providers to create the best treatment plan - include surgical and nonsurgical methods - for each patient.
