A registered nurse and physician regularly check the performance of a pacemaker or implanted defibrillator. They may:

  • Adjust a pacemaker's programming to ensure that the device is operating at maximum efficiency. Patients are seen regularly so battery status can be evaluated and pacemaker leads can be checked to ensure proper functioning.
  • See defibrillator patients every three months to have their devices assessed and be closely monitored for recurrence or worsening of arrhythmia.
