Robotic Surgery

Robotic Surgery | Minor incision, Major results

Saint Joseph Hospital is a proud leader in robotic surgery. We offer robot-assisted surgery for various gynecological and urological conditions using the most advanced technology available - the high definition da Vinci Si Surgical System.

The da Vinci Surgical System provides surgeons with an alternative to both traditional open surgery and conventional laparoscopy, putting a surgeon's hands at the controls of a state-of-the-art robotic platform. The da Vinci ® System enables surgeons to perform even the most complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions with unmatched precision.

We're lucky to have surgeons who are some of the first in the country to do new minimally invasive surgical procedures. In fact, a surgeon on our medical staff participated in FDA trials and completed the first single-incision robotic hysterectomy ever done in the country.

da Vinci Surgical System

The da Vinci Surgical system is designed to overcome the limitations of manual minimally invasive surgery with enhanced capabilities, including high-definition 3D vision and a magnified view. Though it is often called a "robot," da Vinci cannot act on its own - the surgery is performed entirely by your doctor.

Benefits of robotic surgery vs. traditional methods:

  • Greater surgical precision
  • Increased range of motion for the physician
  • Enhanced visualization for the physician
  • Improved access to hard to reach areas of the body

Patient Benefits

  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Significantly less pain
  • Less blood loss
  • Less scarring
  • Shorter recovery time

Check out what some of our patients have to say about their experiences:

  • Urology
    • Prostate surgery, including prostatectomy
    • Partial nephrectomy (procedure to remove part of the kidney)
  • Gynecology
    • Hysterectomy
    • Myomectomy (the removal of uterine fibroids)
    • Uterine prolapse repair
  • Bariatrics

Single-incision robotic surgery

Single-incision robotically-assisted surgery is performed with one tiny incision through the belly button. This makes it virtually scarless.

See the difference in incisions for gallbladder removal:

Open procedure: a long incision

Laparoscopic procedure:
multiple small incisions

Single-incision procedure:
a single small incision

Currently we offer two procedures that can be done using single-incision robotic surgery:

  • Hysterectomy
  • Gallbladder removal
