Comprehensive Radiology Services
64-slice CT- The hospital's 64-slice CT scanner (GE Lightspeed® VCT) uses speed, clarity and resolution to deliver picture-perfect images of neurological, abdominal, vascular, chest, head and spine areas. Images of entire organs are captured in one second - more than twice as fast as conventional multi-slice CT scanners. The system is patient-friendly. Faster scans help reduce patient stress and anxiety, and clearer, sharper images translate into enhanced diagnoses of disease and life-threatening illness.
PET/CT imaging- A non-invasive, highly accurate method to detect cancer. This state-of-the-art scanning technology can be used to determine the exact location and stage of cancerous tissue.
An x-ray (radiograph)- a noninvasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. Imaging with x-rays involves exposing a part of the body to a small dose of ionizing radiation to produce pictures of the inside of the body. X-rays are the oldest and most frequently used form of medical imaging. Routine X-ray procedures are used to study many areas of the body, including the extremities, spine, abdomen, chest and pelvis.
- Bone x-raysmake images of any bone in the body, including the hand, wrist, arm, foot, ankle, knee, leg or spine.
- Chest x-raysare performed to evaluate the lungs, heart and chest wall.
- Myelogramsuse X-rays and a special dye called contrast material to make pictures of the bones and the fluid-filled space (subarachnoid space) between the bones in your spine (spinal canal). A myelogram may be done to find a tumor, an infection, problems with the spine such as a herniated disc, or narrowing of the spinal canal caused by arthritis.
- Fluoroscopy- Real-time imaging used to evaluate specific body areas and organs through a special x-ray technique that makes it possible to see internal organs in motion.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)- A noninvasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. MR imaging uses a powerful magnetic field, radio frequency pulses and a computer to produce detailed pictures of many internal body structures. MRI does not use radiation (x-rays).
Ultrasound imaging- A noninvasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. Ultrasound, also called sonography, involves exposing part of the body to high-frequency sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of the body. (Ultrasound exams do not use radiation, or x-rays). Because ultrasound images are captured in real-time, they can show the structure and movement of the body;s internal organs, as well as blood flowing through blood vessels.
Bone density scanning, also called DEXA scanning -An enhanced form of x-ray technology that is used to measure bone loss. DEXA scanning is most often performed on the lower spine and hips. DEXA scanning is today's established standard for measuring bone mineral density (BMD).
Nuclear Medicine- Useful for functional imaging of specific organs within the body by injecting a radiopharmaceutical agent into the blood stream. Procedures include heart perfusion, bone, liver, lung and gall bladder scans.
- Lower gastrointestinal (GI) tract radiography, also called a lower GI or barium enema - An x-ray examination that uses flouroscopy of the large intestine, also known as the colon. The appendix and a portion small intestine may also be included.
- Hysterosalpingography- An x-ray examination of a woman's uterus and fallopian tubes that uses fluoroscopy and a contrast material, allowing the radiologist to evaluate the shape and structure of the uterus, the openness of the fallopian tubes, and any scarring within the peritoneal cavity.
Interventional Radiology Services
The majority of interventional radiology services are minimally invasive, non-surgical and can be performed on an outpatient basis. Services include:
Percutaneous Biopsy- Performed to detect, localize and assess suspicious tissue using computerized tomography (CT), ultrasound or digital guidance.
Vertebroplasty- Used to treat vertebral compression fractures often caused by a weakening of the bone or osteoporosis. An interventional radiologist injects surgical bone cement into a crushed vertebra to stabilize it.
Mammography- A valuable diagnostic tool in the early detection of breast cancer. This state-of-the-art, low-dosage X-ray identifies breast tumors before a woman feels a lump.
- Digital mammography, also called full-field digital mammography (FFDM) - a mammography system in which the x-ray film is replaced by detectors that convert x-rays into electrical signals. These detectors are similar to those found in digital cameras. From the patient’s point of view, having a digital mammogram is essentially the same as having a conventional film screen mammogram.
- Computer-aided detection (CAD)– Systems that use computer software to search the digital mammogram for abnormal areas of density, mass, or calcification that may indicate the presence of cancer. The CAD system highlights these areas on the images, alerting the radiologist to the need for further analysis.
Breast MRI- permits high-resolution imaging of both breasts at the same time and aids in the detection of breast cancer, as well as provides additional detail for difficult diagnoses.
