Among Our Specialties:

Breast Cancer Care- We offer advanced digital mammography and diagnostic services, and outstanding breast cancer treatment. Patients have access to a compassionate team of specialists and participation in national clinical trials. We are the first breast center in the city of Chicago to be accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers of the American College of Surgeons.

Colorectal Cancer Care- Because colorectal cancer can be avoided if polyps are found and removed before they become cancerous, we are committed to early detection and prevention through colonoscopies and cutting edge radiology screenings. Our colon and rectal surgeons have advanced training in minimally invasive techniques for the diagnosis and removal of cancer that allow preservation of the maximum amount of healthy tissue.

For patients with advanced colon or rectal cancers, for whom surgery is not an option, our interventional radiologists can provide minimally invasive therapies that directly target and treat cancer that has spread.

Gynecological Cancer Care- Our specialists provide comprehensive care—from diagnosis through treatment and follow up—for cervical, endometrial, ovarian, uterine, vaginal and vulvar cancers. We offer the most advanced technology to treat these cancers - including a minimally invasive robotic surgery system for early cases of cervical, endometrial and ovarian cancers.

Lung Cancer - The team at Saint Joseph Hospital customizes a treatment plan for each patient, offering surgical treatment, radiation or chemotherapy depending on the individual patient's needs.  Our thoracic surgeons use a minimally invasive surgical technique to remove lung cancers in patients who are surgical candidates based on localized disease

Liver, Pancreas and Gallbladder - Surgical oncologists perform liver resection, pancreatic surgery and other advanced abdominal surgeries for the treatment of patients with pancreatic or hepatobiliary cancer.  Our interventional radiologists offer cutting-edge, minimally invasive treatment options for tumors that have started in or spread to the liver.

HIV Related Malignancies - Our team has extensive experience and outstanding outcomes in the treatment of lymphomas, anal carcinomas and other cancers that occur in patients with HIV infection. Compassion and respect, coupled with knowledge of the unique issues faced by patients with HIV infection makes The Center for Cancer Care of Saint Joseph Hospital a wonderful resource for patients.

Patient Navigation Team
At The Center for Cancer Care, each patient receives one-on-one care from our patient navigators, experienced nurses who are available to help you deal with the difficulties and complexities of cancer. Working closely with your physician, our patient navigators will coordinate your care, answer your questions, provide education and assess the side effects of treatment, and, support you and your family throughout your illness. Experts in cancer care, our registered nurses have additional certification from the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation.

Specialists for Every Need
Depending on the individual, a wide range of additional experts may be included on the team. Plastic surgeons, pharmacists, therapists, social workers and nutritionists are all available as needed. Together, we do everything possible to provide a full spectrum of care to meet each patient’s complex and varied needs.

Working as a team, our physicians utilize advanced diagnostics for highly accurate results. These high tech tools help us detect cancer at an early stage and monitor tumors during treatment. Our diagnostics include:

  • PET/CT Scan - This sophisticated digital imaging system allows us to quickly determine whether cancer is present, if it is spreading and whether your current treatment is working. One exam generates two types of medical images that are synthesized into one incredibly detailed composite. This provides us with extensive information about your condition. Our PET/CT scanner can be used to detect and monitor a wide variety of cancers including breast, lung, head and neck, and cervical, as well as melanoma and lymphoma.
  • CT-guided Biopsy - Computed tomography-guided biopsy is an advanced process for obtaining a sample of a potentially cancerous tumor or mass for evaluation. To more accurately target the tumor and minimize the damage to surrounding tissue, we use digital cross-sectional images of the body to guide us in collecting the sample.
  • Breast MRI - Among the most advanced of all diagnostic tools, Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive system that uses a magnetic scanner, radio waves and computerized graphics to produce highly detailed images of body tissue. It can be extremely valuable in assessing breast abnormalities because it gives us a more detailed image than ultrasound or mammography. That, in turn, allows our physicians to make more accurate diagnoses and treatment recommendations.
  • Full-Field Digital Mammography with Computer Assisted Detection (CAD) - Another advanced tool for the detection of breast abnormalities, the full-field digital mammogram with CAD involves the use of computers to bring suspicious areas on a mammogram to the attention of our radiologists. Used after a radiologist has conducted an initial evaluation, this technology highlights areas that may merit further review and additional testing.

The Center for Cancer Care participates in numerous national and international trials of emerging cancer therapies. These not only give you access to cutting-edge treatments, but also allow you to influence your own care.

Your team of physicians and other cancer experts will work in partnership with you to determine the best options for your treatment. Our doctors have a full range of tools to fight your cancer—from the latest drug and chemotherapeutic treatments to participation in national clinical trials to the most advanced technology. Plus, our expert radiation oncologists have the experience and training to deliver precise doses of radiation that minimize the impact on surrounding tissue.

Depending on your diagnosis and individual needs, your treatment may include one or more of the following options:

  • Three-Dimensional Conformal Radiation - This advanced procedure uses a computer to create a detailed 3-D image of a tumor. By seeing the nuances of the tumor's shape, our radiation oncologists can be even more accurate in targeting each dose of radiation.
  • Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) - A state-of-the-art form of radiation therapy that uses computer-controlled X-rays to deliver precise radiation doses to the tumor. IMRT allows the radiation dose to conform more precisely to the 3-D shape of the tumor by controlling the intensity of the radiation beam. This precise treatment also minimizes the impact to surrounding tissue and critical organs. It is particularly effective for treating cancers of the prostate, head, neck and central nervous system.
  • High Dose-Rate Brachytherapy (HDR) - An innovative form of internal radiotherapy, this treatment actually places the radiation inside your tumor - usually through a thin, temporary catheter. Like IMRT, it is effective at concentrating radiation where you need it most, while minimizing the impact on healthy tissue.
  • Surgery - In most cases, surgery to remove tumors is a treatment option. We are able to perform surgery conventionally or with cutting-edge technology. For certain patients, minimally invasive surgery with the da Vinci Surgical System reduces the risk of infection and pain, shortens the hospital length of stay and results in less scarring.
  • Percutaneous Ablation- When surgery is not an option or not ideal, interventional oncologists can directly treat certain lung, liver, kidney and bone tumors through a puncture-like incision with ablative technologies that heat (radiofrequency/microwave ablation) or freeze (cryoablation) the tumor cells to lethal temperatures while sparing the adjacent tissues.
  • Chemotherapy - Our staff has decades of experience in successfully administering inpatient and outpatient chemotherapy, the use of chemical agents to stop the growth of cancer cells. Depending on the nature of your cancer, treatment may be oral, IV-administered or injected.
  • Chemoembolization/Radioembolization- For patients with tumors in the liver, interventional oncologists can identify the blood vessel feeding the tumors and deliver chemotherapy (chemoembolization) or microscopic radioactive beads (radioembolization) directly to the tumor itself, minimizing exposure to healthy tissue and providing much higher doses of chemotherapy or radiation than can traditionally be administered.
  • MammoSite Targeted Radiation Therapy - For breast cancer patients, this is an alternative to traditional radiation treatment following a lumpectomy. Radiation is administered through a catheter at a higher daily dose, decreasing overall treatment time from 5-7 weeks to 5 days.

Oncology Infusion Center

Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center in Chicago, a sister hospital, has opened a new satellite oncology infusion therapy center at Saint Joseph Hospital. Infusion therapy is a cancer treatment in which staff administers chemotherapy intravenously.

Cancer doesn't only change the life of a patient, it affects friends and loved ones as well. That's why we offer comprehensive support and education programs to help everyone cope with this complex condition.
