Welcome to Saint Francis Hospital's
Outpatient Surgery Program

The goal of the Saint Francis Hospital's Outpatient Surgery staff is to provide you with excellent, quality care during your visit. In order to provide excellent care, we would like to provide you with some pre-procedure educational information to help prepare you for your procedure. If you have any additional questions or concerns about our program, please call the Pre-Admission Testing Unit at 847 316-4517, Monday thru Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Preparing for Your Procedure

  • Contact your insurance company to notify them of your upcoming procedure and find out how to obtain authorization.
  • Your surgeon will instruct you if your procedure requires pre-procedure testing. Pre-procedure testing can be done with at your primary care physician's office, Saint Francis Hospital or at any other hospital or facility.
  • Obtain a copy of your Advance Directive if you have one and bring it with you.

Important Pre-Procedure Instructions

  • Prior to your procedure your surgeon will give you specific instructions concerning food and liquid consumption on the night before and day of your procedure. It is very important that you follow the instructions as directed so that your procedure will proceed as planned.
  • Do not drink alcoholic beverages or smoke 24 hours prior to your procedure.
  • Several weeks before your procedure, ask your surgeon if you should stop taking medications that contain any of the following: Aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Aleve, Ibuprofen, Anticoagulants (Coumadin, Plavix, Lovenox, Heparin), Allergy Medications, Herbs and Vitamins, Birth Control medication.
  • Bring a written list of medications you have been taking including the dose and how often you take the medications.
  • If you should get a cold, fever, or any other illness prior to your procedure, call your surgeon's office for instructions. Your procedure may need to be postponed.
  • Arrange to have a responsible adult accompany you home if you are planning to return home after your procedure.
  • A nurse from our Pre-Admission Testing Unit will call you prior to your procedure. You will be asked questions regarding your health history and your pre-procedure instructions will be reviewed with you. We will make every effort to confirm the time you need to arrive in the Outpatient Surgery department prior to your procedure, but in some cases you may be instructed to confirm the time with your surgeon's office directly.

When You Come For Your Procedure

  • Your arrival time is usually 1 to 1 ½ hours before the procedure is scheduled. Your procedure time is approximate. On rare occasions due to emergencies we may need to delay or sometimes cancel your procedure. Our goal is to stay on schedule, but if your procedure is delayed we will keep you informed. The time prior to your procedure is necessary to complete registration paper work, pre-procedure assessment and preparation.
  • We have designated free, in-door parking on the third floor of the Hospital Parking Garage for your convenience. You may also park for free in our outside parking lots located on the hospital campus.
  • Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing. Leave all valuables at home such as jewelry, cash, and credit cards. Bring your insurance cards and identification.
  • When you arrive at the hospital, please check in at the information desk in the East Lobby of the hospital. You will be given directions to the Outpatient Surgery department on the second floor. You may be directed to our Admitting department if they have not contacted you prior to your procedure. If you need assistance to our department, wheel chairs are available in the East Lobby.
  • For your convenience you will be asked to sign your registration paperwork, privacy summary, and insurance forms in the Outpatient Surgery department.
  • For your safety, an Identification Band will be placed on your wrist.
  • Before surgery you will change into a hospital gown and be provided with slippers for your feet. A robe will also be provided to keep you warm and protect your privacy.
  • If you wear glasses, contact lenses, and/or dentures, you may need to remove them before your procedure. Please bring your personal contact lens case. We will provide you with a denture cup if needed.
  • Your personal belongings will be locked in locker until you go home or may be given to a family member for safe keeping if you prefer.
  • Your vital signs will be taken and a nurse will have you sign your consent form for your procedure.
  • Your nurse will insert an intravenous line if necessary for your procedure.
  • If a history and physical is necessary, a physician assistant, resident, internist or your surgeon will complete it.
  • When it is time for your procedure, you will be taken to the procedure area on a cart covered with warm blankets.

Family Waiting Room

While you are having your procedure, your family and friends may wait in the Waiting Room on the second floor conveniently located near both the Outpatient Surgery area and the surgical procedure suites. Complimentary coffee, water, and tea are provided. There are also vending machines in the waiting room. The hospital cafeteria is located on the first floor of the hospital. Cell phone usage is permitted in the waiting room. Pagers are available in the Outpatient Surgery department if you wish to leave the area. The pager will vibrate to alert you when to return to the Waiting Room to speak with the surgeon.

After Your Procedure

  • After your procedure, you may be taken to our Recovery Room where Registered Nurses will carefully monitor your recovery from your procedure and provide medication to ease discomfort. Your vital signs will be automatically taken every few minutes and you may have an oxygen mask on your face. The recovery room nurse will ask you to rate your pain on a scale of 1-10 to determine how to medicate you appropriately. After your recovery, you will be transported back to the Outpatient Surgery department. If you will be staying in the hospital overnight, you will be admitted to a hospital room.
  • If you are not required to go to the Recovery Room, you will go directly back to the Outpatient Surgery department where your nurse will monitor your vital signs and pain level, your family members will be able to be with you again, and you will be provided with a light snack to eat and liquids to drink.
  • When you are ready to be discharged home, your nurse will verbally review your discharge instructions with you and your family members. You will also receive a special discharge packet with important written instructions, follow-up information, medication prescriptions, and emergency contacts.
  • When you are ready to go home, you will be escorted in a wheelchair to the East Lobby and discharged into the care of the person you designated to take you home.
