Saint Francis Hospital's Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department is dedicated to providing the highest quality of care to return patients to their fullest possible function.

Our highly trained staff or clinical professionals include licensed physical, occupational and speech therapists as well as licensed physical and occupational therapy assistants and rehabilitation technicians.

Following a referral/prescription for treatment, patients are thoroughly evaluated by a therapist to assess their current condition.

Occupational Therapy

The occupational therapy team uses goal-directed activities to treat people with limitations due to illness, injury or aging. Our goal of therapy is to help patients gain their highest level of independence in daily tasks at home and at work.

Appropriate referrals to occupational therapy are those patients with orthopedic, neurological, cardiopulmonary or rheumatological disorders, in addition to any condition which may limit upper extremity function or individual’s ability to perform activities of daily living.

Physical Therapy

Comprehensive musculoskeletal, neurological and cardiopulmonary health is the focus of the Physical Therapy Program. Our goal is to rehabilitate the patient to an optimal functional status at work, at home and in the community.

We utilize gait and balance training, manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, neuromuscular re-education, modalities, and numerous rehabilitation protocols to assist our patients in their recovery.

Speech-Language Pathology

Speech-language pathology treats people with a variety of diagnoses including aphasia, dysphasia, dysarthria, cognitive deficits and communication difficulties due to a tracheostomy, voice pathology and laryngectomy.

Our goal is to achieve a maximal levela of independence geared toward the patient's specific cognitive-communicative and swallowing needs.

Therapeutic interventions may include:

  • Speech/language/cognitive evaluations
  • Clinical bedside swallow evalutations
  • Videofluroscopic swallow studies/modified barium swallow evaluations
  • Clinical voice evaluations
  • Videostroboscopic voice examinations
  • Flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing
  • Laryngectomy and head and neck cancer rehabilitation
  • Treatment plans designed to optimize patient's strengths and improve areas of weakness
  • Patient/family education
