Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston offers the most advanced radiology and diagnostic imaging resources available. Using state-of-the-art technology, doctors can view, with extraordinary clarity, everything from tiny blockages in the veins to microscopic tumors. This allows our physicians to diagnose and treat a full range of medical problems for patients of all ages – from sports injuries to vascular conditions to cancer.

Radiology and Imaging Services

As technology advances and high-quality imaging equipment becomes more widely available, patients can now benefit from a wide range of treatment options:

  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) uses radio frequency and a strong magnetic field to produce remarkably clear and detailed images of internal structures and tissues that may not be visible with other imaging methods. Our new MRI provides the most up-to-date diagnostic capabilities that reduces scan time by approximately 50% and provides a more open and friendly experience for patients without compromising clinical performance. This equipment can now also be used for taking images of the breasts, producing exquisite diagnostic exams.
  • Breast MRI is the latest development and an important advancement in diagnosing breast cancer by taking a breast biopsy guided in real-time by magnetic resonance (MR). The technology allows the radiologist to take the biopsy in the MR suite. This streamlines the diagnostic process and in some cases makes it possible to biopsy suspicious tissue that would otherwise have been very difficult to target. MR-guided breast biopsy is usually a preferred alternative to surgical biopsy. It is used when ultrasound or mammogram (stereotactic) guided biopsy is not appropriate because the area of concern is not well seen by mammography or ultrasound. Sometimes, MR-guided biopsy is called for when an abnormality is seen only on a breast MR and cannot be visualized by ultrasound or mammogram. Guided by MR imaging, the doctor places a needle into the suspicious area and removes a sample. A core needle, which removes a small, cylindrical-shaped tissue sample, is used. The procedure requires only a topical anesthetic and leaves little to no scarring. MR-guided breast biopsy costs less than a surgical biopsy, can be done in less than an hour and has no potential complications. Saint Francis Hospital now uses newer core needle technology that uses a special vacuum-assisted needle to draw out tissue.
  • 64 Slice LightSpeed Computed Tomography (CT) Scanner from GE Medical Systems produces superior 3-D images and is up to six times faster, making exams quicker and more comfortable for patients.
  • Stereotactic Radiosurgery is a new minimally invasive brain cancer treatment which enables a high dose of radiation to be applied to a very specific and often difficult to reach target without damaging the surrounding healthy tissue. Radiosurgery is an excellent alternative treatment that requires no incision, eliminating complications and substantial recovery time.

Interventional Radiology

Through our Interventional Radiology services, radiologists use imaging equipment to guide small instruments through the body to treat a wide range of medical conditions such as varicose veins, fibroids and vascular disease. Most procedures require small or no incisions and can be performed on an outpatient basis with significantly reduced risk, pain and recovery time.

The Saint Francis Radiology department is staffed twenty-four hours daily providing continuous support for all services within the hospital.
