Obesity is a disease -- one that can hurt your quality of life and may even cut your life short. Saint Francis Hospital’s Bariatric Surgery program can help you lose weight and reduce the health risks associated with excess weight.

If you are 80 to 100 pounds (36 to 45 kilograms) overweight or your Body Mass Index (BMI) is above 40, you may qualify for weight loss surgery. You may qualify for weight loss surgery with a slightly lower BMI if you suffer from illnesses commonly seen as a result of excessive weight such as diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, heart disease, or other complications.

Saint Francis Hospital Offers
Several Methods of Bariatric Surgery

One type of surgery does not meet all needs. That’s why we offer several bariatric weight loss surgery options, to meet the specialized needs of a variety of bariatric patients.

The Bariatric Surgery program at Saint Francis Hospital includes all of the most common procedures such as:

  • Minimally Invasive Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass
  • Minimally Invasive Laparoscopic Gastric Band (Lap-Band)
  • Traditional Open Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

Weight Loss Surgery to Meet Your Individual Needs

  • Minimally Invasive Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass - Sometimes called "The Gentle Approach to Bariatric Surgery," this technique uses tiny incisions and special laparoscopic technologies to create a tiny stomach pouch so you will feel more full when you eat. Saint Francis Hospital offers leading-edge laparoscopic technologies for this type of bariatric surgery. The laparoscopic method of gastric bypass generally allows you to leave the hospital sooner and have a less painful recovery because the incisions are smaller. Candidacy depends on medical history, surgical difficulty, general health and body shape.
  • Minimally Invasive Laparoscopic LAP-BAND Surgery - The laparoscopic LAP-BAND weight loss surgery offers a reversible, adjustable approach to weight loss surgery. A ring is placed around the upper part of the stomach, to ensure that you feel more full and eat less. The band is adjustable and can be removed if you choose. This minimally invasive technique means you may leave the hospital sooner and have fewer scars and a less painful recovery. Candidacy depends on medical history, surgical difficulty, general health and body shape.
  • Traditional Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass - Once the only method used for surgical procedures, traditional open gastric bypass surgery involves making a 6-8 inch incision to access the stomach and intestines and create a small stomach pouch. Saint Francis Hospital offers the open Roux-en-Y procedure, though most surgeons prefer to operate using the less invasive laparoscopic procedure whenever possible. Both the open and laparoscopic techniques have similar weight loss results. Candidacy depends on medical history, surgical difficulty, general health and body shape.
