Early detection saves lives
To detect breast cancer early, when it is most treatable, the American Cancer Society recommends:
- Women over 40
- Get an annual mammogram
- Have a yearly clinical breast exam by a healthcare professional
- Perform monthly breast self-exams
- Women 20-39:
- Have a clinical breast exam by a healthcare professional every three years
- Perform monthly breast self-exams
When you choose to have your mammogram or any other women’s imaging service at Saint Francis Hospital, you benefit from the highest standards of professional care and the latest technology, including digital mammography.
Saint Francis Hospital is proud to be designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology. This recognition confirms that our staff is well qualified to perform and evaluate your diagnostic imaging tests and that our facility and equipment meet or exceed quality assurance and safety guidelines. In fact, of the 353 breast centers in Illinois, only 44, or 12.4%, have this designation.
At Saint Francis Hospital, you'll find a comfortable environment where you will get the personalized attention and expert care you deserve.
Women’s Imaging Services
All of our imaging services are conducted by Board-Certified Radiologists and Registered Technologists specially certified in mammography and ultrasound.
State-of-the-art digital mammography is the latest tool available to detect breast cancer at an early stage and it has many advantages over conventional mammography:
- Less exposure to radiation
- Reduced exam time for more comfort and convenience
- Images are processed electronically in real-time
- Clearer images emphasize contrasts and identify abnormalities that may not be visible on traditional film mammography
- A built-in "second opinion," computer aided detection (CAD) system, can identify potential concerns even before radiologists views the results
Our ultrasound technology enhances detection and aids in diagnosis by delivering superb image quality with uniformity and high resolution.
Breast MRI permits high-resolution imaging of both breasts at the same time and aids in the detection of breast cancer, as well as provides additional detail for difficult diagnoses.
Ultrasound-guided Breast Biopsy
A less invasive procedure that uses a needle to remove cells from a suspicious area to diagnose a breast abnormality.
Stereotactic Breast Biopsy
In this minimally invasive procedure, a computer-guided needle is used to collect samples of abnormal tissue to determine if cancer or another abnormality is present.
Bone Mineral Density Test (DEXA)
Bone density scanning, also called dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, or DEXA, is an enhanced form of X-ray that is used to measure bone loss. DEXA scans are considered the gold standard for detecting and monitoring osteoporosis because they are extremely accurate and non-invasive.
