What is an MRI?
Doctors commonly use MRIs to accurately diagnose, treat and monitor ailments involving organs, soft tissue, and bones. This type of imaging provides greater detail than traditional x-rays, ultrasound and CT scans.
An MRI is a noninvasive, usually painless procedure that uses magnetic fields, radio waves and a computer for imaging rather than radiation.
Here at Resurrection Medical Center, we use MRIs to evaluate the following conditions:
- Brain disorders
- Traumatic injuries
- Eye abnormalities
- Spine diseases
- Tumor detection
- Liver, kidney and other abdominal diseases
- Knee and shoulder injuries
- Musculoskeletal disorders
- Facial/neck abnormalities
- Infection
- TMJ abnormalities
- Blood flow and vessel disorders

What You Can Expect
During the procedure, you will be asked to relax and to stay as still as possible for the 30-60 minutes it takes the exam to finish. Some MRI tests require an injection of a contrast agent to help enhance the detail of tissues, blood vessels, and organs. The dye is put through an IV started in a vein in your hand or arm.
After the scan, the images will be reviewed by a radiologist and a specially-trained physician who interprets the scans to help your doctor in your diagnosis. The report will be available to your doctor within 24 hours. Your physician will share the results of the scan with you to discuss your next steps.
How to Prepare
An MRI is relatively safe and generally poses no risk for most people. You should wear comfortable clothing with no metal. Bring your Physician's orders, insurance card, and picture identification with you. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment.
Any metal in or on the body may affect imaging quality and cause discomfort or injury during the procedure. It is important to remove all metal on your body, such as dentures, hearing aids, hairclips and jewelry.
If you have worked with metal or have been in the military, please inform the technician as there may be traces of shrapnel in your body that could affect the exam. If you are pregnant, or suspect you are pregnant, please inform your physician and/or technologist.
In addition, before undergoing an MRI exam, be sure to inform your physician or the technologist if you have any of the following:
- Cardiac pacemaker
- Artificial heart valve
- Cochlear (ear) implant
- Metal plate, pin or metallic implant
- Intrauterine device (IUD)
- Aneurysm clips
- Previous gunshot wound
- Permanent tattoo or eyeliner
