Family Supports Patient Care Addition with $250,000 Gift
June and George Block are wonderful friends to Resurrection Medical Center (RMC). This past fall, their family foundation made a $250,000 pledge to support the hospital's new five-story patient care addition. In gratitude for this leadership gift, a nursing station will be named in their honor.
George and June Block, residents of Park Ridge, met on the ski slopes in Michigan in 1955. They married that December. From that first meeting when George loaned June wax for her skis, they have enjoyed skiing all over the world. "Being active has always been our way of life," said June.
After graduating from Lane Tech High School on Chicago's north side, George worked as a tool and die apprentice. In 1958, his mentor asked him to become his partner, and they took over a business named Carsten's.
Today, Carstens provides charting systems and hospital supplies to more than 30,000 hospitals and health care facilities worldwide. Carstens is headquartered in Park Ridge and has approximately 100 employees, many who have been with the company for decades.
"We have been very happy with our care at Resurrection Medical Center," Mr. Block said. "Our family business supports hospitals, so it was important to us that our gift makes an impact on health care. This gift will directly touch our family, friends and our employees that live in our community."
The Block's ties to Resurrection Medical Center began when both children were born there. All their doctors are also at the hospital. Later, they became involved when their friends, Stan and Dorothy Banas, chaired Resurrection Health Care's black tie gala, The Monarch Ball.
"The Blocks have a true zeal for life. Their family's gift will support good health in the community. We will forever be grateful to them," noted Sister Donna Marie Wolowicki, C.R., Executive Vice President/CEO, Resurrection Medical Center.
Note: Mr. Block passed away December 3, 2009, at age 93. He will be missed.
Mrs. Block, age 81, died peacefully on May 31, 2010. They were married for 55 years.
