Diagnoses and Treatment

The diagnoses and treatment of cardiac conditions are performed in several areas depending on the patient's needs. These areas include cardiac diagnostics, cardiac catherization, Pacemaker/Cardiac Device Clinic, and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. Cardiac services at Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center include the following:

  • Electrocardiograms (EKG or ECG) record electrical activity of the heart and provide information about the heart's function and structure.
  • Echocardiograms (ECHO) provide views/moving pictures of the heart that measure chamber size, wall thickness, blood flow, valve function and wall motion.
  • Stress tests record the electrical activity of the heart under stress. Regular stress tests require patients to walk on a treadmill. Myoview stress tests use injected isotopes to visualize the coronary arteries. Adenosine and Dobutamine stress tests use medication to make patients' hearts react as if they were walking.
  • 24-hour Holter monitoring requires patients to wear a small monitor with electrodes to record heartbeats for a 24-hour period.
  • Cardiac catherization procedures, also known as angiograms, involve placing a catheter and dye into the artery to enable the cardiologist to determine pressures in the heart chambers, conditions of the valves and blockages in the arteries.
  • Balloon angioplasty is a procedure that involves guiding a small catheter with a balloon tip into a clogged artery and inflating the balloon to push against the plaque to open the artery. The balloon is deflated and the catheter is withdrawn.
  • Angiojet is a system that removes a blood clot from an artery by pulling the blood clot up into a catheter, using a pressurized high velocity of saline, breaking up the blood clot and removing it from the body.
  • Pacemaker/Cardiac Device Clinic is the place where patients are examined to evaluate the condition of their pacemakers or other cardiac devices. These tiny implanted devices regulate the heart's rhythm through a series of electrical impulses. Staff visit homebound patients as well. A telephone monitoring system provides a quick and easy way to test a pacemaker and other cardiac devices 24 hours a day.
  • EECP is the Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP) noninvasive outpatient treatment for reduction or elimination of angina/chest pain symptoms.

Prevention and Rehabilitation

Recovering from a heart attack or living with cardiovascular disease requires changes in lifestyle. These changes include a diet and exercise program, and learning about the cardiac episode.

The Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program includes inpatient treatment, outpatient care and lifestyle modification. Each phase provides education and exercise tailored to each patient's needs and aims to help improve the patient's overall health and strength. Staff provide physicians with regular progress reports and EKG data about their patients. Learn more about how our sophisticated new monitoring system helps cardiopulmonary rehabilitation patients.
