Schedule

A staff member will call you the afternoon before your surgery and give you a definite time to arrive at the SurgiCenter at Holy Family Medical Center, along with instructions for your preparation. You may also receive a call from the Anesthesia Department. Please provide the Pre-Surgical Testing Department with a number where you can be reached the day before surgery.

Instructions to Our Patients

  1. Do not eat or drink anything, including water, after midnight the night before surgery. Failure to comply with this request could cause your surgery to be re-scheduled.
  2. If you routinely take medication for your heart or blood pressure, you will be instructed to continue those medications.
  3. Do not bring jewelry or valuables with you to the medical center. All jewelry, including earrings or jewelry from body piercings, must be removed before surgery, with the exception of your wedding ring, which will be taped to your finger. The medical center is not responsible for your jewelry or valuables. Make-up and nail polish must be removed prior to your arrival.
  4. We recommend you wear low-heeled, slip-on shoes and casual, comfortable clothing. Tight clothing may be uncomfortable and could make it difficult to get dressed after surgery. You do not need to bring pajamas, night-gown or a robe. The SurgiCenter provides appropriate clothing.
  5. To leave after your operation, a licensed driver must take you home. You will not be permitted to leave alone after your operation. We advise that you have someone with you the night after your surgery. The staff will be able to estimate when you will be ready to go home so you can make the necessary arrangements. You can expect a stay of two to four hours after your surgery is completed, depending on the type of surgery and anesthesia involved. Family members or anyone responsible for driving you home may wait in the waiting room or remain with you as you recuperate.
  6. Dentures, bridges or contact lenses may not be worn if you’re having a general anesthetic. Dentures and/or bridges must be removed prior to surgery and will be placed in a special container. In the case of cataract surgery, dentures will remain in place so as not to change the contour of your face during surgery. If you wear contact lenses, you must remove them prior to any surgery; bring your solution and case from home.
  7. Notify your surgeon of any change in your physical condition before your surgery, such as cold or flu. Your surgery may have to be postponed until you are well again.
  8. If your condition after surgery warrants it, your physician may decide to place you in observation overnight and order additional treatment.
  9. A parent or legal guardian must accompany a minor in order to sign a consent form. Two adults must accompany the child home so one can drive while the other helps the child.
  10. Due to our waiting room size, we encourage you to limit visitors the day of surgery to two. We also discourage bringing young children with you the day of surgery.
