Extended Care Services

The Extended Care Unit (ECU) at Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center is a Medicare certified skilled nursing unit that provides nursing care and rehabilitation services for patients recovering from a stroke, orthopedic surgery, respiratory illness and other conditions. The area serves as a transitional unit where short-term stays allow patients to transition more smoothly from an acute hospital setting to their homes. Individually tailored programs are developed for the needs of each patient and a multidisciplinary team works with each patient in the healing process. The ECU team includes:

• Physician specialists including physiatrists
• Registered nurses
• Certified nursing assistants
• Physical therapists
• Occupational therapists
• Speech therapists
• Social workers
• Dietitians
• Recreational therapists

The goal is to help each patient achieve his or her highest level of functioning before discharge.

For patients who require inpatient care after an acute hospitalization, Saint Joseph Hospital conveniently offers two levels of Extended Care Services.  Patients’ physicians work with our health care team to determine the appropriate site of care.

Sites of Care

• Skilled Nursing Unit at Saint Joseph Hospital
  Provides nursing care for patients recovering from stroke, wounds, infectious disease, orthopedic surgery and other conditions.

• The Rehabilitation Inpatient Unit at Saint Joseph Hospital
  Provides intensive rehabilitation services and nursing care to patients recovering from stroke, orthopedic surgery and other conditions.

The Extended Care Units at Saint Joseph Hospital provide each patient with the encouragement, support and resources needed to progress toward recovery. Both use team conferences that help the patient and family participate in defining realistic goals and plans.
