Tachycardia and fibrillation are medical names for rapid heart rate. Many patients with this problem are helped by having an automatic defibrillator implanted in their chests. When the heart begins to beat more rapidly, the defibrillator delivers a safe electric shock to slow the heart. Every three months, defibrillator patients come to the Device Clinic at Resurrection Medical Center to have their devices checked. Electrophysiologists -- cardiologists who specialize in electrical disorders -- are available to answer questions. A clinic-sponsored support group helps patients and families deal with the lifestyle changes this diagnosis and treatment entail.
