Saint Joseph Hospital provides a full array of services for the treatment of urinary incontinence. Our board-certified physicians include experts in Urology and Urogynecology who offer a range of therapies and treatments for all types of incontinence and urinary problems.
Comprehensive surgical and nonsurgical treatments ranging from behavior modification with biofeedback and medical therapies to a full range of surgical procedures are available. Combinations of treatments are sometimes used. Common treatment options include:
- Medication - Several medications are available to treat conditions that cause urinary incontinence. The most common types of medicine treat infection, replace hormones, inhibit abnormal bladder muscle contractions or tighten sphincter muscles.
- Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation - A variety of methods such as pelvic floor stimulation, biofeedback and exercise can be employed to strengthen and train muscles to restore urinary continence. These are used alone or in combination with medications and surgeries.
- Surgery - When surgery is necessary, several different procedures are available based upon the person’s age, activity level and diagnosis. Some procedures are minimally invasive.
- Urethral Injections - The injection of bulking agents such as collagen is designed to create an artificial cushion in the urethra that may help restore continence, especially in women.
