The Saints Mary and Elizabeth Family Medicine Residency Program offers many advantages beyond medical training and patient care. These include social opportunities, a comprehensive benefits package, many housing options, and the excitement of living in Chicago.
Housing, Lifestyle, and Chicago
Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center is located at the intersection of four historic neighborhoods on Chicago 's Near Northwest Side: Humboldt Park, Ukrainian Village, West Town, and Wicker Park. These communities have a rich cultural heritage and are home to residents from diverse ethnic backgrounds. Homes and apartments within a reasonable distance from the Medical Center are available in every price range. Residents who prefer to live in the suburbs enjoy easy access by car or public transportation.
Standing on the shores of beautiful Lake Michigan, Chicago boasts thousands of wonderful restaurants, an exciting nightlife, music and arts festivals, shopping, and countless cultural attractions. The world-famous Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Lyric Opera, Art Institute, and Field Museum of Natural History are just a few of the many institutions that bring the city its international reputation. Contributing as well to the city's image are its many sports franchises, most notably the Cubs, White Sox, Bears, Blackhawks, and Bulls (the latter made famous by Chicago's best-known resident, Michael Jordan). For the average city dweller, though, perhaps the most treasured local asset is the lakefront. Consisting of miles of public lands stretching from the North Side to the South Side, Chicago's parks and beaches make it unique among the nation's great cities.
The residency program's friendly, supportive atmosphere extends beyond the workplace. Residents are invited to participate in many medical staff social activities as well as numerous other informal events - including barbecues, baby showers, and more that occur on a regular basis throughout the year. These events help residents, attendings, and their families get to know each other better on a personal level.
Family Medicine residents and their families receive a comprehensive benefits package, including medical and dental insurance, life insurance and disability coverage, employee health services, educational stipends, retirement benefits, paid time-off for holidays, paid sick leave, CME time, and the option of participating in the Medical Center’s tax-deferred retirement savings plan. Residents also receive free parking and meals at the hospital. Salaries are competitive with those at other residency programs in the Midwest. A sample contract is provided at the time of your interview.
