On September 1, 2003, after more than 200 combined years of service to our community, Saint Mary of Nazareth Hospital Center and Saint Elizabeth Hospital joined together under the auspices of Resurrection Health Care, Chicago’s largest Catholic Health Care System. The new institution, officially known as Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center, strengthens the Catholic health care ministry that has been dedicated to serving the community for more than a century. At nearly 450 beds, the newly expanded and renovated facility represents the largest hospital on the northwest side of Chicago. It also represents the largest hospital in the metropolitan area in which Family Medicine is the only sponsored medical residency program.
The main inpatient facility for the Family Medicine Residency program resides on the South Campus of the new Medical Center. It hosts over 400 beds and a wide array of services comprising 36 physician specialties and a medical staff of almost 500 practicing physicians. With over 65,000 Emergency Department visits, over 4,000 inpatient surgical procedures, over 25,000 inpatient stays, and almost 2,400 deliveries per year, it serves as an ideal community hospital training site for Family Medicine residents.
The North Campus facility focuses primarily on psychiatric services, skilled nursing, and outpatient surgery. Residents will often access these services for patients in their continuity practice.
