Clinical Rotations

Preliminary Medicine Track

  • General Medicine and Critical Care for 8-9 months. One month is usually spent as a night float intern
  • Elective Rotations for 3-4 months*

* Preliminary trainees may choose electives from a list of electives recommended by the trainee's future specialty board. Other electives may be arranged on case-by-case basis.

Categorical Internal Medicine Track

Categorical residents are required to complete seven core electives:

  • Pulmonary Medicine
  • Nephrology
  • Cardiology
  • Hematology/Oncology
  • Infectious Disease
  • Gastroenterology
  • Neurology

Additional options include Allergy/Immunology, Endocrinology, and Radiology. Heart Station and Rheumatology are incorporated into the required Ambulatory rotations. Off-campus electives are available and can be arranged on an individual basis. A maximum of one month may be spent off campus during the three year Categorical Internal Medicine Track.

PGY 1 Typical Schedule

  • General Medicine and Telemetry for 7-8 months, of which 1 is usually spent as a night float intern
  • Critical Care Medicine (ICU) for 1-2 months
  • Ambulatory Medicine for 1 month
  • Elective Rotations for 1-2 month(s)

PGY II and III Years

  • 3 Rotations in Ambulatory Medicine
  • 3-4 Rotations in Critical Care (ICU, ER)
  • 6-8 Rotations in medical subspecialty electives
  • 1 month in Geriatric Medicine
  • 1 month in Palliative Care/End-Of-Life Medicine
  • Remaining rotations in supervisory capacity on the general medical floors and Telemetry
  • One month as a night float resident

4 - 4:30 p.m. Sign-Out Rounds
