The Department of Medicine has a full-time department chairman and three program directors responsible for the training of 79 residents. They are assisted by 13 subspecialty section chiefs. Salaried faculty members direct activities in the outpatient clinics, private offices, critical care units and most subspecialty sections.
The department faculty consists of 280 attending physicians, over half of whom have subspecialty training. Many of the Department of Medicine's staff members have a university appointment. Faculty members practice both primary care and referral medicine; our patient population therefore represents the entire spectrum of disease, offering a wide range of common and unusual medical problems. Many members of the department are outstanding teachers and make important contributions to house staff education informally at the bedside and at scheduled conferences.
