Westlake Hospital Internal Medicine Residency
About the Program
The Resurrection-Westlake Internal Medicine Residency Program is sponsored by Resurrection Medical Center. Our program accommodates 30 categorical residents and 5 preliminary positions. The primary teaching site is Westlake Hospital with rotations at Resurrection Medical Center (RMC), Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center (OLR), and Holy Family Medical Center (HFMC). This combination of community hospitals provides the resident with a broad array of patients.
Our program is based on a three-year curriculum. General medicine and subspecialty topics are presented in the "noon" lecture series. Grand Rounds occur twice a month, with a Journal Club once a month. Morbidity and Mortality Conference is twice monthly. Morning report and ICU rounds are daily. Faculty teaching rounds occur five times a week on the primary care floors. Subspecialty conferences are held monthly. Ethics and psychiatry conferences are held quarterly. All residents in their second year present an hour-long discussion on a topic of their choice to their colleagues and faculty. In addition, each third year resident prepares and presents a CPC.
There are sixteen board certified individuals who comprise the full time Resurrection-Westlake faculty. The resident has significant exposure in every area of internal medicine. Each resident completes a research project during his or her third year with a faculty member as a preceptor. This project is presented to the program and department each spring. Awards for the best research project are presented at the Annual Resident Recognition Dinner in June.
The Resurrection-Westlake Internal Medicine Program is a dynamic one. We are able to respond to the needs of the individual and changes in the environment. Most subspecialty rotations now include office experience besides the traditional consultative hospital service. Rotations in such areas as: laboratory medicine, office gynecology, ophthalmology, ENT, dermatology, hospice and urgent care plus a three year continuity clinic emphasize the skills needed for the practice of medicine in today's environment.
Our evaluation system allows the program to measure itself as it assesses the residents. Based on these evaluations, changes are made in the program and in resident assignments to further the goal of strong residents in a strong program.
Residents have the greatest responsibility possible both for patient care and for their education. We pride ourselves on superior and rigorous teaching that emphasizes academic and practical skills, and the compassionate application of science to the care of patients. Learning is enhanced by maintaining the primary role of the resident in patient management and by providing an intellectually rigorous setting that encourages inquiry and discourages dogma. The resident is a teacher and role model for the students from Stritch School of Medicine who rotate through the Internal Medicine service.
Residents in our program are taking a journey that is preparing them for academic medicine, fellowship or private practice. This is done in an environment that encourages each person to develop the entire scope of his or her skills, both as a physician and as an individual.
