Other Benefits
- Health Insurance - Saint Joseph Hospital provides health insurance coverage to the resident trainee. This coverage includes a deductible for any admission not to Saint Joseph Hospital.
- Voluntary Dental Plan - The resident is eligible to participate in the Saint Joseph Hospital dental plan.
- Voluntary Vision Plan - The resident is eligible to participate in the Saint Joseph Hospital vision care plan.
- Disability Insurance - Provided certain criteria are met, Saint Joseph Hospital provides long-term disability coverage to residents.
- Life Insurance - Life insurance coverage is available to residents at an amount equal to twice the annual stipend rate, as well as for accidental death and dismemberment.
- Credit Union/Tax-Sheltered Accounts - The resident is eligible to participate in the Saint Joseph Hospital tax-sheltered annuity plan and may conduct business with the Health Care Associates Credit Union.
- Vacation - Paid Time Off: The PTO Plan Provides RESIDENT PHYSICIANS 29 days total per annum at 100% prorated paid stipend for the PGY 2 and above (which includes educational leave) and 24 days for the PGY 1. Paid Time Off is defined as time off for a vacation, holiday, or personal reasons or for the first two (2) days of an absence due to illness, injury, disability, or maternity/paternity
- Education Leave - Residents may request a leave of absence to complete FLEX, State or National Board examinations. Second-year residents and beyond may apply for up to seven days of educational leave time and a stipend to attend one outside medical meeting per year, with prior approval by the program director.
- Illness - The Extended Illness Plan provides up to 10 days (or 80 hours) total per annum at 100% prorated paid stipend for an absence of the third day for a three-day consecutive illness up to 10 days per contract year.
- Meals - A discount is provided on meals served in the hospital cafeteria. There also is a meal allowance for on-call assignments.
- Uniforms - Uniforms are provided by Saint Joseph Hospital.
- Parking - Parking in the Saint Joseph Hospital garage is free, provided your car displays a valid hospital parking permit.
- Employment Eligibility - The J-1, Exchange-Visitor visa, is intended for educational purposes. It stipulates that a holder of the visa will return to his/her home country following completion of the program. SjH will support J-1 visa applications for residents and fellows through sponsorship by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).
The H-1, Temporary Worker visa, allows its holder to work only for a specified employer. It requires substantial additional documentation and sponsorship by SJH. Any unusual costs associated with an H-1 visa will be guaranteed by the residency program, such as a return plane ticket if the resident is discharged before the visa expires. Any applications fees are the responsibility of the resident.
