It’s an ‘A’ in Hospital Safety for Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center

Hospital earns highest mark for patient-safety measures

Chicago, Ill. – October 23, 2013 — Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center  received  an ‘A’ in  the Hospital Safety ScoreSM for keeping its patients safe from injuries, infections, medical and medication errors, according to The Leapfrog Group (Leapfrog).  The hospital Safety Score is compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading experts on patient safety and is administered by Leapfrog, an independent industry watchdog. The first and only hospital safety rating to be analyzed in the peer-reviewed Journal of Patient Safety, the Score is designed to give the public information they can use to protect themselves and their families.

Leapfrog released scores for 2,652 U.S. hospitals.  The medical center was one of only 831 U.S. hospitals and 60 in Illinois to receive an ‘A’ grade on how well its health care workers protect patients from avoidable mishaps.

“While we are pleased to offer our patients the latest technology and best specialty care available, we are focused on keeping our patients safe,” said Martin Judd, the medical center’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “This ‘A’ rating is indicative of the hospital team’s commitment to providing an environment of safety for patients.”

Leapfrog evaluated the hospitals based on 26 national performance measures of safety, quality, and resource utilization and then issued hospitals letter grades of A, B, C, D or F.  The single grade represents a hospital’s overall success in keeping patients safe from infections, injuries, and medical and medication errors.  Assessment data are publicly available at the national level, including data reported through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ Hospital Compare and the Leapfrog Survey, on the Hospital Safety Score website.

The Hospital Safety Score is intended to help the public make informed decisions about patient safety.  The goal of the Safety Score is to reduce the more than 180,000 yearly deaths from hospital errors and injuries by publicly recognizing safety and exposing harm.
