Presence Center for Advanced Care at Saint Joseph Hospital Approved for Construction

Unanimous Vote by Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board Clears Way for State-of-the-Art Medical Office and Ambulatory Services Building

(CHICAGO) – Today, the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board voted 7-0 in favor of the construction of the Presence Center for Advanced Care at Saint Joseph Hospital. With Board approval secured, construction is set to begin in July 2013.

“This is a tremendous step forward for the future of health care in the Lakeview neighborhood and throughout Chicago,” said Dr. Roberta Luskin-Hawk, President and CEO of Presence Saint Joseph Hospital. “Presence Health has made it our mission to transform the way we provide patient care and the Presence Center for Advanced Care will be truly transformational. With its highly coordinated programs and state-of-the-art technology, along with the other services provided on the campus, the Center will be a convenient and efficient option for patients, physicians and staff. The new Center will also help us attract the best physicians, provide our patients with the best care possible and ensure this community can continue to rely on Saint Joseph Hospital for their health care needs for years to come.”

The Presence Center for Advanced Care will be a 205,000 square-foot medical office and ambulatory services building west of the hospital in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood. The project, developed by Hammes Company, is designed to create a healing environment and provide patient and family-centered care. The Center will include a comprehensive cancer center, an ambulatory surgery center, a modern center for endoscopy and advanced GI diagnostics, a multi-disciplinary musculoskeletal institute including outpatient physical therapy, advanced imaging and a Women’s Center.  The building will be the new home of Chicago Institute of Advanced Bariatrics and will house professional office suites, a conference center, an Integrative Medicine center and parking. A glass sky-bridge will provide easy access to the hospital. The building will be ready for occupancy in the spring of 2015.

The Presence Center for Advanced Care is being constructed in response to community need and verified physician interest. Presence Saint Joseph recently completed a master planning and feasibility process, and in 2006, zoning approval was granted for the project. It has the full support of 44th Ward Alderman Tom Tunney. The Center will allow Presence Saint Joseph to provide better coordination of services, including chronic disease prevention and management in an outpatient setting. The new building will also free up clinical and non-clinical space in the hospital, which will be modernized and improved.

Presence Saint Joseph Hospital is a teaching hospital, home to 6 independent residency programs that train approximately 143 residents each year. The hospital also educates medical students, nursing students, pharmacy students and other health care providers. In 2012, Presence Saint Joseph provided $29 million in total community benefits to address the health needs of the neighborhood.
