Presence Resurrection Medical Center Bypass Surgery Program Earns Top Rating
One of Five in Illinois to Earn Three Stars for Reporting Period
Chicago, Ill. – March, 2012 – Presence Resurrection Medical Center (PRMC) recently received a 3-star (highest) rating for overall coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), also known as bypass surgery, from The Society for Thoracic Surgeons (STS). The rating was based on data compiled and publicly reported from 2011-2012. A 3-star rating designates the highest category of quality and means that bypass-surgery results are statistically better than the national mean.
According to the STS, these scores compare the results of a hospital or surgical practice/group with those of an average hospital or practice participating in the Database and treating patients with the same mix of severity of illness. Only about 10 to 15 percent of participating U.S. hospitals received the 3-star rating. CABG is a procedure that involves using blood vessels from the patient’s leg, arm or chest wall to bypass blocked and narrowed arteries and restore adequate blood flow to the heart muscle. “This recognition reflects the hard work and dedication of our entire cardiac surgical team,” said Jeffrey Silver, M.D., Chairman, Department of Surgery and previous Chief of Cardiac Surgery for the last five years. “Our three-star rating means that patients can be confident in the quality of our program and be assure that the will receive the patient centered care they deserve”.
STS developed the comprehensive rating system based upon the risk-adjusted data in four categories:
- Avoidance of mortality
- Avoidance of morbidity (percentage of patients who leave hospital with no serious complications such as stroke or kidney failure)
- Use of the internal mammary artery from the chest wall during surgery, shown to lead to better results
- Use of four prescribed medications following surgery, shown to improve results
