Drs. Lutfi, Tiesenga Elected Officers of Illinois Association of Bariatric Surgeons
Chicago, Ill. – January 8, 2013 – Rami Lutfi, M.D. (below, at left), board-certified surgeon, was recently elected to a two-year term as president of the Illinois Association of Bariatric Surgeons (IABS), a state chapter of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).
Fred Tiesenga, M.D. (below, at right), board-certified surgeon, was elected to a two-year term as secretary of the IABS, which has about 100 members that include surgeons and physicians. Drs. Lutfi and Tiesenga are co-medical directors of The Chicago Institute of Advanced Bariatrics at Presence Saint Joseph Hospital – Chicago.
The ASMBS is the largest medical society for the bariatric specialty in the world. Bariatrics is the branch of medicine that deals with the treatment of obesity. Bariatric surgery is referred to as weight-loss surgery. The goal of the IABS is to improve access to care for obese patients.
The surgeons have extensive experience in the most advanced weight-loss procedures, including single-incision, scarless and robotic bariatric surgery. Together, they have completed more than 1,500 surgeries, including Lap-band, gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy and gastric plication. Dr. Lutfi performed one of the first robotic bariatric procedures (gastric plication) in the world. Drs. Tiesenga and Lutfi also teach other surgeons bariatric procedures.
