Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Cancer Program
Receives Three-Year Accreditation with Commendation
Chicago, Ill. – December 14, 2012 -- The cancer program at Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center (PSMEMC) recently received three-year accreditation with commendation from the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS).
As an accredited cancer program, PSMEMC demonstrates an important commitment to providing patients with access to high quality services they need – from diagnoses through treatment, rehabilitation and survivorship.
To achieve accreditation, the medical center participated in a rigorous voluntary evaluation by a physician surveyor who reviewed the full scope of the program – including cancer committee leadership, data management, clinical services, community outreach and quality improvement. Cancer programs must undergo an on-site review every three years to maintain accreditation.
"The uniqueness of our cancer program is truly the team effort – from our physicians and nurses to cancer tumor registry staff members who collect data and our new oncology patient navigator who works one-on-one with patients and families" said Korathu Thomas, M.D. (photo at right), medical director, PSMEMC cancer program. "Everyone on the team is actively involved in providing patients and families with the very best care each step of the way."
For patients, receiving care at a CoC-accredited cancer program ensures they have access to:
- Comprehensive care, including a wide range of state-of-the art services and equipment
- A multispecialty team approach to coordinate the best treatment options
- Access to treatment options
- Cancer-related information, education and support
- A cancer tumor registry that collects data on type and stage of cancers and treatment results and offers lifelong patient follow-up
- Ongoing monitoring and improvement of care
- Quality care close to home
"One of the benefits of our program is that patients will receive high quality, personalized and compassionate care in their own neighborhood – without traveling far," Dr. Thomas said.
New to the cancer program is an oncology patient navigator – an advanced practice nurse – who helps educate cancer patients and family members about diagnoses and treatment plans. The navigator also schedules physician appointments, tests, procedures and provides referrals to appropriate cancer support programs and services.
There are more than 1,500 CoC-accredited cancer programs in the United States and Puerto Rico – representing nearly 30 percent of all hospitals. Staff at these 30 percent of CoC-accredited hospitals diagnose and/or treat about 80 percent of all newly diagnosed cancer patients each year.
