Saint Francis Hospital Nurse Honored with Regional Award in Nursing Excellence

EVANSTON, IL (September 20, 2012) – Saint Francis Hospital Director of Patient Care Services and Magnet Program Coordinator Lydia Dacenko-Grawe is the recipient of Nursing Spectrum’s 2012 Advancing and Leading the Profession regional award. The award recognizes Dacenko-Grawe’s extraordinary contributions to the nursing field in the greater Chicago-area.

Since 2005, Dacenko-Grawe worked to promote the Magnet Model with the nursing department at Saint Francis in order to meet the requirements for Magnet status. Magnet Recognition was designed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to ensure quality patient outcomes and the professional development of the nursing staff. As the Magnet Coordinator, Dacenko-Grawe led a team that supported the professional growth and development of the nursing staff in meeting professional goals and improving patient outcomes. She also organized and developed the content of the six volume Magnet Document that was submitted to the ANCC as part of the Magnet Recognition process.

Saint Francis Hospital earned Magnet status in 2010, and under Dacenko-Grawe’s guidance, the hospital continues to exceed in quality and educational criteria outlined by the Magnet program.

One of Dacenko-Grawe’s latest initiatives involved creating and promoting the use of Saint Francis Hospital’s multidisciplinary clinical simulation lab. This lab is utilized by the nursing staff for annual competency sessions, nursing orientation, and is available to the students from seven nursing schools that complete their clinical practicum at Saint Francis.

"In a way, I feel a little selfish because [the nursing staff] all deserve awards for everything that we’ve accomplished together," Dacenko-Grawe said. "I work with them every day. I see how much they put into everything we do.”

A graduate of the Saint Francis Hospital School of Nursing, Dacenko-Grawe also oversees nursing education at Saint Francis, including the promotion of nursing research, publishing and presentations. She co-chairs the Saint Francis Hospital’s Evidence-Based Practice/Research Council and the Performance Improvement Council, making sure the hospital’s nursing departments continue to strive towards the highest possible standards in patient care and nursing education.

“We are very proud of Lydia and her accomplishments. We are especially pleased, and lucky, to have her on staff at Saint Francis Hospital,” said Jeff Murphy, executive vice president and chief executive officer. Dacenko-Grawe is a resident of Western Kenosha County and commutes to Evanston, Illinois to perform her nursing management duties.

Dacenko-Grawe is one of the six regional winners chosen to represent Greater Chicago in Nursing Spectrum’s National Nurse Excellence awards. The national winner will be named in December 2012.
