Saint Joseph Hospital’s Internal Medicine Residents All Pass Board-Certification Exam – Three Years in a Row!
Chicago, Ill. – July 12, 2012 – For the third consecutive year, graduating physicians from Saint Joseph Hospital’s Internal Medicine Residency Program have achieved a 100-percent pass rate on the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) certification exam.
Saint Joseph Hospital is the only hospital in Illinois (with an Internal Medicine Residency program) to earn a 100-percent exam pass rate from 2009-2012. What that means is that every resident who graduated from this residency program and took the certification examination during the last three years passed the rigorous all-day exam on the first attempt. Twenty Illinois hospitals have Internal Medicine Residency Programs.
Each year, Saint Joseph Hospital accepts 22 residents from about 5,000 applicants to its three-year Internal Medicine Residency Program. During their training, residents provide care to outpatients and inpatients under the guidance and supervision of clinical teaching faculty, and in collaboration with nursing and allied healthcare staff.
“The 100-percent pass rate attests to our strong clinical curriculum, the hospital’s commitment to medical education and outstanding support from administration, faculty and hospital staff who work with the residents,” said Nkemakolam Iroegbu, M.D., MPH, F.A.C.P. (photo at right), program director, Internal Medicine Residency Program, Saint Joseph Hospital. “By the end of the day, our physicians are the best trained and prepared to care for patients.”
The board exam assesses the residents’ level of excellence, competence and knowledge in internal medicine. Board certification is used by many hospitals and organizations as a marker of excellence in assessing physicians’ delivery of care. The three-year board pass rates for 2009-2012 were recently posted on the ABIM website.
“Our trainees represent a very diverse group from all over the world, with varying backgrounds and experiences,” Dr. Iroegbu said. “We provide a carefully developed curriculum and personal attention. It’s gratifying to know our physicians are well prepared when they graduate.”
