Saint Joseph Hospital Surgeon Performs Robotic Bariatric Surgery

One of first procedures of its kind done in U.S., around the world

Chicago, Ill. – April 27, 2012 – Saint Joseph Hospital continues to lead the way in bariatric surgery. Rami Lutfi, M.D., FACS (photo at right), medical director of the Chicago Institute of Advanced Bariatrics, recently performed a bariatric procedure – gastric plication – using the hospital’s robotic technology.

This surgery was one of the first robotic bariatric procedures of its kind to be performed nationally and internationally.

Patient benefits from the minimally invasive robotic surgery include faster recovery with fewer incisions and minimal trauma to the body.

Gastric plication is an innovative procedure that is simpler than traditional gastric bypass surgery, which divides the stomach to create a small pouch while also reducing the length of the small intestine available for absorption. The gastric plication approach requires simply folding the stomach and stitching it up to reduce its size – limiting food intake. With this procedure, the surgeon does not cut or remove any of the stomach, and no foreign body or device is needed.

“Everything went really well with the robotic surgery,” Dr. Lutfi said. “Robotic equipment provides superior visualization with 3-dimensional views and more accuracy in suturing the stomach.”

Dr. Lutfi said this type of bariatric surgery requires many sutures or stitches in the stomach. The robotic equipment enhances the range of motion for the surgeon. With 3-dimensional visualization, suturing can be performed easily and precisely with the robotic arm. The robotic gastric plication surgery takes about two hours. The procedure is investigational and requires a patient's consent.

“More long-term data is needed on the effectiveness of gastric plication, but early research shows it’s potentially safer and simpler than traditional bariatric surgery with good patient results.” Dr. Lutfi said.
