Saints Mary and Elizabeth’s Adult Echocardiography Laboratory Receives Accreditation
Chicago, Ill. (May 10, 2011) – The adult echocardiography laboratory at Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center (SMEMC) was granted accreditation from the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL).
Accreditation status means the facility has been reviewed by an independent agency which recognizes the lab’s commitment to quality testing for the diagnosis of heart disease. Participation in the ICAEL accreditation process is voluntary.
Echocardiography provides information on cardiac structure and flow that is useful in the detection and management of many types of heart disease. An echocardiogram is a noninvasive test that has become one of the standard diagnostic tools in cardiology, with an estimated 10 million performed annually in the United States.
A nonprofit organization, the ICAEL was established with the support of the American Society of Echocardiography, the American College of Cardiology and the Society of Pediatric Echocardiography.
