Saint Joseph Hospital Receives Breast Imaging Center of Excellence Accreditation
One of only 4 Chicago facilities to receive designation
Chicago, Ill. (August 5, 2009) – Saint Joseph Hospital’s Imaging Department received three-year accreditation as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence (BICOE) from the American College of Radiology (ACR) – one of only four out of 49 facilities in Chicago to achieve this designation.
The BICOE designation is granted to facilities that undergo a rigorous process to meet strict national clinical and administrative guidelines in quality, safety, licensing and operations for mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy and breast ultrasound (including the Ultrasound-Guided Breast Biopsy module). Currently this process is voluntary. In 2012, this designation will be necessary for facilities to obtain reimbursement from Medicare & Medicaid.
Peer-review evaluations, conducted in each breast imaging modality by board-certified physicians and medical physicists, determined:
- Saint Joseph Hospital personnel are well qualified, through education and certification, to perform and interpret medical images and administer radiation therapy treatments,
- Equipment is appropriate for each test or treatment, and
- The facility meets or exceeds quality assurance and safety guidelines.
